obedience (detail)

This is a detail of an encaustic collage I did, recently posted to my flickr account. I had a comment on this piece from artist Femke van Delft that she thought it very funny that an aboriginal person would be using bits and pieces of a National Geographic magazine to make art. Who knew?

I've never really considered you Aboriginal...

I wonder why it would be funny to her.

It is too bad that Flickr doesn't allow bigger pictures to see the detail.

What to say about that? My mom is Ukranian, and my dad was Metis. His dad Cree/Metis and his mom Polish.

Why would it be funny for someone with native ancestors to make art from National Geographic? Because for years they made art and entertainment for the upper crust of society with photos and stories of "savages". A quote from an 1896 article in National Geographic reads, "These people are of a dark bronze hue, and have good athletic figures. They possess some excellent traits, but are horribly cruel when once they have smelled blood." There is an arrogance in the reporting and an assumption of a lack of intelligence for anyone who is not of the same nationality as those publishing the magazine.

Well I knew you weren't full native. Now I know the rest of the story!!

I never knew that about National Geographic. Mind you...at the time that was probably considered OK to say things like that. Not that it was right, but in context of the times, it was not unusual. Thank goodness we have come a long way from that. Not totally, but a long way.
